VHF course (UPDATED: Evenings of 20th and 21st Feb)

Update 11th Jan (jpallen)

The club will run a VHF SRC course on the evenings of 20th and 21st Feb 2019, and the exam on the evening of 27th Feb 2019 (TBC).

Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment on a UK flagged vessel. The tutor will be Paul Lawton from Blue Albatross Coaching (https://bluealbatross.co.uk/)

The course will run from 6pm to 10pm on both evenings of Feb 20th and Feb 21st. You will need to attend both evenings.

The course fee is £70, and the exam fee is £60 (there will be a separate external examiner). It is possible to do the course without doing the exam.

Previous post

I have obtained a price for a VHF course. It consists of 3 hours pre-reading, 6 hours training (2 consecutive evenings or one Sunday), then 3 hours for the assessment. Cost is £70 for the training (down from £110) plus £60 for the assessment and certificate. 6 people needed to make the course run.

Please could people reply if they would like to do the course. Also please say if you would like the training to be over 2 evenings or a sunday. Also which month? January? February?

Comments

  • I would like to do the course. Jan or Feb my preference would be to do it on a Sunday but flexible.

  • I'm interested in this. I would prefer evenings, since I'm often away the weekend. No preference on month.

I've been looking into this myself as well, but will wait to see if this is a goer! Thanks for organising it.

Do we have to pay for the £60 assessment and certificate if we have already done it? I might be be interested in a refresher for £70 if there are spaces left. Give others priority...

  • I would like to do this course, I have lots of commitments throughout January & February, evenings are probably better than weekends

  • Hi Jane,

Do we know if this will be going ahead, and if so when? Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with organising it. I spoke to Paul independently about doing a course before he mentioned he was doing one for the club.

    Cheers

We now have dates for the VHF course: The evenings of the 20th and 21st of February. The exam will be on the evening of the 27th.

Bookings are up on webcollect now: https://webcollect.org.uk/exetercc/event/vhf-src-course

  • Just to let the participants of this course know: at the December 2018 committee meeting it was agreed that a subsidy of £40 would be available to the attendees of this course who meet the following requirements:

    • attain a qualification that requires a VHF licence eg BC sea kayak leader
    • run 6 club trips that use this qualification.

Application for the subsidy is made by providing evidence of the qualification and the club trips to the lead coach for the relevant discipline. Subsidy will then be obtained via a refund from the Treasurer.

Since the first 6 places filled up quickly, I've spoken to the tutor and he's agreed to add another two places, which now available in webcollect again.
