open boats - practice pre level 1 coaching

Does anyone want some practice in the canal with open boats in the couple of weeks leading up to the level 1 coaches course?
This is aimed more at those who are doing the course, but more than happy for 2* plus open boaters to join in and pick us up on things as well.

Once i have a stage show out the way at the beginning of march I will be looking at going out to play a bit and reacquaint with them. Let me know if you're interested

  • Henry Michaelson wants to sign up to get some open boat experience. I will get him to log in under his own email. but count him in.
  • Jackie,
The 2* paddlesport award as you say is in both Kayak and canoe, the club is running 2* canoe coached sessions (see the club webcollect page) during this season.

The dates/sessions Ive listed above are aimed more at those doing their level 1 coaching course in April as a refresher, as such we wont be coaching, more helping each other to ensure skills are ready for the course.
I'm not trying to put you off and more than willing (possibly when its a bit lighter/warmer) to give you a hand to work on 2* skills.

I may not be at the club on the 8th, but feel free to have a chat.
  • Great that you are arranging this Mike, Thank you.

I will be available during the week after Easter, Tuesday - Friday, any but not all days, to offer some coaching and practice for those attending the level 1 course in April. Just let me know who can come out to play and when.

Just a reminder, for level 1, your 2* skills need to be at what I describe as 'demonstration standard' so you can show your candidates what you expect them to do in kayak and canoe. Your rescue skills need to be FSAR standard and 'slick'. Your swimmers would prefer to be paddlers and you don't want them getting cold! Some of you know, I recommend you should be able to have a swimmer back in the boat in less than a minute from making contact. This doesn't sound long until you are that reluctant swimmer! It can be done much faster. Practice different methods of getting the swimmer back in the boat, they don't all work for everyone! Have a look at the rescue videos here:

Get/continue practising and shout for help and advice on the water.

    Good luck,

    Brian.
  • Ok, Tuesday is nearly here, anything anyone particularly wants to go over?
We may also get some of the Axe vale guys on the course come along to join in some of these sessions.
We will do a wet session, but not this week !
  • Anyone wanting to go out Saturday?
  • Mike. My son Henry is trying to get an invitation code so that he can communicate directly via the forum. I am speaking to him and the phone and he can see these messages but can't currently log in to respond. He is keen to come out on Saturday to improve open boat skills prior to coaching course. He has only done limited open boating. Also what are the plans for Tuesday (tomorrow night). Also do you have a contact phone number please? Owen
  • Hi Owen
Tomorrow night is meet at 6ish be on water by 6.30. Basically i am looking at peer to peer help each session and each session is based on what people want. Im not planing on wet work tomorrow (rescues etc) but could look at these on Saturday

Im on o77six7 48seven887 (hope that makes sense!)
  • Ok, looking at 9.30 -10 start with Malc in a sit in kayak on friday morning (as he doesnt paddle them much at present). Can do open boat after if needed...

Saturday 9.30-10 start (open boat)..currently Ben (not on this coaches course but planning to do a coaching course soon) and Henry, maybe Paul. This will involve wet work. Will be going through all aspects of 2* assessment.

Im in Maidstone Sunday working (happy Easter) and back around on Monday (not too early as i suspect bed at 3-4am!!) But happy to come out and play if wanted.
  • Interesting session this morning. .tad windy but useful
  • Does anyone want some more time on the water with me this week? Still available any of but not all of Tuesday - Friday....
  • Still planning on being out in open boat tues night.

    Roll up, roll up!
  • Ok looking to do some wet work on saturday, maybe Jon Norman, Paul Hookway? What time peeps want to start?
  • Gill from AveVale would like to join us, so can we say 9.30ish ?
  • That would be great, thank you
  • After chatting following todays session Paul, Helen and I will be trying rescues in short boats tuesday. If peeps want to carry on and take out an open boat feel free or join us in short boats (it'll feel weird paddling what is essentially half a boat!!)
  • Congratulations to everyone on the course
