Sea kayak development group

Would you like to get into sea kayaking on moving water? Sea kayaks are great in the surf, swell and rock hopping. I am planning to put on some skills sessions over the next 12 months to enable new sea kayakers learn skills to go paddling in more advanced conditions. A target is for the group to go to the Anglesey symposium from Friday 28 April to Monday 1 May 2017 and if possible for the courses week until Friday 5 May.

The skills sessions will include:
• Efficient forward paddling and paddling fitness for heavy sea kayaks
• Boat handing skills: manoeuvring
• Rescues skills starting with basic skills done quickly and increasing the difficulty of the conditions
• Paddling in strong winds
• Reading the water eg anticipating the effects of the swell
• Expectations when paddling as part of a group
• Navigation, weather and how to plan a trip (classroom sessions)

Other skills that can be learned within the club
• Efficient forward paddling
• White water skills eg support strokes
• Rolling
The group is aimed at paddlers up to recent 3* sea kayak standard. To join the group you do not need to have more than 1* skills. However the less experienced paddlers will need to put in some work over the winter to catch up on paddling fitness and boat handing skills. You can expect to get wet during the skills sessions.

All skills sessions and trips will be advertised on the club forum. Initial programme includes:
Saturday 1 October sea kayak journey
Tuesday evenings sea kayak paddles: aim to be on the water for 6.30pm. Dates when a Topsham run on the river will work are 2.11, 15.11, 29.11, 13.12.
Wednesday 19 October Navigation classroom session 7pm to 9pm, Clubroom
Wednesday 26 October Navigation classroom session 7pm to 9pm, Clubroom
If you would like to join the group please reply to this email.

  • I would, but not a huge amount of spare weekends between now and December
  • Excellent idea. I will have to balance white water with sea trips.

Sounds good. I am interested. Cannot make this Saturday's trip though. Richard.
  • Hi Jane,

Betty and me are certainly interested in keeping the sea kayaking going over winter (although I would like to do a bit of white water too), so please keep us in the loop.

In general, we're probably more likely to be up for sea kayak trips on the sea at the weekend, rather than the canal on a Tuesday, but I'm sure we'll make it down for some of the Topsham runs.

    We're away this weekend though...

I'm definitely interested in attending one of the navigation classes.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • Jane, can you confirm that all the projected Tue night trips to Turf are in November / December? Thanks Jacqui
  • Hi Jacqui

The suggested trips to Topsham are in Nov and Dec because that is when the tides work for the river. There will be other evenings when people just paddle on the canal. Also the river would still work if people can start earlier etc.
  • Yes nav class is on this evening.

Week 1 is OS maps and bearings. Week 2 will be charts. 7 to 9pm.
Also planning some dates for sea and touring trips during the next couple of months. Bring your diaries.
  • Hi Bob
We'll be paddling on Tuesday. I got the date wrong. See you tomorrow.
