Club sea kayaking Summer 2020
Club sea kayaking can now start
Tuesday evening: sea kayak 2* refresher skills
5 places available for a coaching group to catch up on previous skills. We regret that this group is not suitable for beginner paddlers, as we cannot ensure social distancing for beginners.
Meet 6.15pm at Maclaines
If more people want to paddle on a Tuesday they can go on a paddle to gain paddling fitness.
Initial group will be Tuesday 23 and 30 June

This occurs from time to time. Please watch the forum.
Club trips on the sea
These can now take place. They will be posted on the club trips section of the forum. To come on one of these trips you need to have some sea kayak paddling experience, and to be paddling fit. This equates to at least four paddling sessions on the canal.
The club trips will include a journey and will finish with a skills session when you will get wet. The sea is reasonably warm now.
Club trips will start when the wind is not too strong. They may be mid week or at the weekend.
Lockdown rules mean that transport for people cannot be shared. However we can share transport for kayaks.
Lockdown rules
• When accessing the club please ensure that you comply with the social distancing requirements, ie stay at least 2 metres apart. Limit the number of people in an aisle in the boat sheds to two at any one time. Don’t dawdle on the landing stages.
• If you have used club equipment please wipe down the paddles, seats and toggles at the end of your session so that they are clean for the next person. Each boatshed has hand sanitiser and wipes to use for the time being.
• For people who have used club equipment please add a luggage label to the boat and paddle when you have finished with it, and wiped it down. This will enable other club members to select an alternative club boat and paddle. Labels and pens are available in each boat shed.
• A maximum group of six is permitted.

Sorry Jane, only just seen this. Is the Thursday group the same as the touring trips?
Yes. I was worried that someone might turn up. Fortunately everyone preferred to stay dry.
Is this Tuesday’s (23rd) skills session Staying on the canal? Also, are we doing wet drills?
Any more room? I'm very keen to join tomorrow and the 30th!
23 and 30 June will be on the canal (30th on the river as well if the lock gate is open by then).
I suggest everyone who wants to paddle comes along and we will split into 2 groups if necessary.

Tuesday 21 July: tide is right for a trip to Topsham. Meet at the club to start soon after 6.15pm.

Is there a session planned for next Tuesday?
There is a sea kayak skills session each Tuesday, but please may I check that you have some experience in sea kayaks. We are sadly unable to offer coached sessions for beginners at present.
Hi Jane. I went on a few sea kayak trips last year (outside the club) and am generally quite happy in a kayak, though I am by no stretch a seasoned sea-kayaker. Is that OK?

Yes that is fine. We meet at Maclaines shed to start soon after 6.15pm.
Jon - the sea kayak shed is on the opposite side of the Canal basin to the Clubhouse. There will be people around so should not be hard to find. Sea kayaks and equipment are free to use for Club members. Lights are required as the nights are closing in. It is worth buying some cheap ones for bicycles at somewhere like Go Outdoors. These cvan be fixed to the kayak and are waterproof. Also worth keeping an eye on the forum for beginners sea trips, and touring trips over the winter.
